One of South Yorkshire’s key figures of the last twenty years has been recognised with an OBE for his voluntary services to the community.
Alan Tolhurst, from Rotherham, will receive the honour at Buckingham Palace this autumn after being acknowledged in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List earlier this year.
Alan, who holds a number of key roles in the region, is currently the chair of the Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield Consultative Committee.
The Committee, with support from South Yorkshire Joint Secretariat, is a link between the management team at the airport and local communities to discuss ideas and information concerning the airport and its impact on the area.
Alan has been chair of the Committee for nearly four years and oversees the on-going relationship between the airport and the local community.
Alan said: “I’m in regular contact with the airport management and representatives of residents in the local area to ensure there is an ongoing dialogue amongst all those with an interest in the airport.
“I was the Station Commander at RAF Finningley and so I’m delighted to continue my association with the airport. This place has been a big part of my life and has an important role to play in the prosperity of South Yorkshire.”
Alan was the Managing Director of the World Student Games held in Sheffield in 1991 and is currently Chairman of NHS Rotherham.
Alan, who is also a Deputy Lieutenant for South Yorkshire, added: “It is a tremendous honour and privilege to be recognised with an OBE and I’m incredibly proud.
“I thoroughly enjoy working within local communities in South Yorkshire to improve the region. But there are countless other people working voluntarily in the area whose efforts go unrecognised.
“The honour has come completely out of the blue. But obviously I’m thrilled to be recognised and I’m very much looking forward to receiving the OBE.”
